The Normans
We have recently been learning about the Norman Invasion of Ireland in History.
The Normans brought big changes to Ireland when they arrived here in the 1100s. Well known for conquering new territory, Norman lords built motte and bailey forts, which later developed into stone castles. Towns like Kilkenny, Trim and Drogheda began to grow and develop around these castles. The Normans encouraged farmers to grow crops as well as raise cattle. The Normans also introduced the system of parishes, each with its own church and priest.
Our class took on the challenge of creating our very own motte and bailey inspired fortresses. We created these castles in groups and ensured each fort had a castle on top of a motte, a bailey (courtyard), a moat, a fence and a drawbridge.
