We were very lucky to receive a visit from historian Dave Swift through the Heritage in Schools programme.
Dave gave an engaging and interesting presentation about Ireland before and during the Easter Rising of 1916. We learned about domestic and military life at this time and were able to explore the fashion, military uniforms and weaponry from the time.
Learning about Irish history was interesting for everybody. Accounts were given of the various organisations involved in the Rising, including the Irish Citizen Army, Irish Volunteers/ Irish Republican Army, Cumann na mBan, the Royal Irish Constabulary, Auxiliaries and the British Army leading up to the declaration of Ireland as a sovereign independent state through the reading of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic.
