School Therapy Dog

28th Jan 2026

We’re delighted to share that our school has submitted an application to join the My Canine Companion School Therapy Dog Programme — Ireland’s first dedicated school therapy dog initiative.

My Canine Companion (MCC) is a national charity accredited in training and placing therapy and assistance dogs in schools across Ireland. Since launching its school programme, dozens of therapy dogs are already helping pupils and staff in schools nationwide.

Therapy dogs in schools are known to support wellbeing, reduce anxiety, and create a more positive learning environment. MCC’s own research shows that schools with a therapy dog report improvements in areas like student wellbeing, attendance, and staff morale.

By joining this programme, our school aims to:

  • Enhance emotional support for students during the school day

  • Foster calm, positive interactions in classrooms and corridors

  • Boost confidence and social skills across the school community

The application process includes information sessions, visits, training plans and a partnership with MCC’s team to ensure the dog’s wellbeing and that they are the right fit for our school. We are currently awaiting our school assessment and handler home assessment. We expect these to be carried out in the coming months. If successful, the therapy dog will become a valued member of our school family, working alongside trained staff and following careful wellbeing and safety guidelines.

This is an exciting step for our school — and we’ll be sure to keep everyone updated as we hear back from My Canine Companion. 🐶✨
