School Library
With the new folding partition wall constructed, we are able to use the back of the General Purpose (G.P) Room for part of our school library. As many of you know our school uses the Reading Recovery (Junior & senior Infants) and Accelerated Reading (1st – 6th class) programmes. All our books are levelled so each child is reading at their ability and towards their own individual targets. More information on Accelerated Reading can be found at https://uk.renaissance.com/products/accelerated-reader/ More information on Reading recovery can be found at https://pdst.ie/primary/literacy/reading-recovery The higher level books are now located at the back of the G.P. Room. This is where we also store our iPad charging trolley. We again thank the Carrigallen Bingo Committee for their incredibly generous donation of €8,000 towards our school’s Accelerated Reading 5-year subscription fee. Without their assistance we would be unable to provide this fabulous programme.
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a reading program designed to encourage students to read more and improve their comprehension skills. It works by allowing students to choose books at their reading level, read them independently, and then take short quizzes to assess how well they understood what they read. The program tracks progress and awards points based on the difficulty of the book and the student’s quiz score, helping teachers and students set personalised reading goals. The benefits of Accelerated Reader include
- Increased motivation to read.
- Improved reading fluency and comprehension.
- Better overall academic performance.
- It helps us as teachers to monitor student progress.
- Better provide targeted support to build a lifelong love of reading.
Reading Recovery is an early intervention program designed to help young children who are struggling to learn to read and write, usually in their first years of school. The program provides one-on-one instruction from a specially trained teacher (Ms McCaffrey) for about 30 minutes each day over a short, intensive period. Each lesson is tailored to the child’s specific needs, focusing on building confidence, comprehension, and literacy skills. The goal is to bring students up to the average reading level of their peers as quickly as possible. The benefits of Reading Recovery include:
- Rapid improvement in reading accuracy and understanding.
- Increased confidence and motivation to read.
- A stronger foundation for future learning success.
