Reading in our School

4th Feb 2026

Accelerated Reading is one part of our wider reading strategy at Scoil Mhuire Naofa. Other strategies we use include but are not limited to:

  • Reading Recovery
  • Phonics Programmes
  • PM Readers (levelled books)
  • PM+ Readers
  • Certificates for 100,000 + words read on the AR programme
  • Big Books
  • Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) Time
  • School Book Fair
  • Library visits
  • Visits from authors, poets etc.

Our aim is not simply to improve scores, but to help every child become a confident, enthusiastic reader who enjoys books and understands what they read.

Our AR programme has been made possible by the generosity of the Carrigallen Bingo Committee. The committee donated their entire profits of €8,000 for the year to our school. Their goodwill has allowed us to fund the programme for a further 5 years without any charge to families.

Each week a cohort of pupils are picked to return read books to the library from every class. They ensure that the books are all in the correct level boxes and shelves and ready for the week ahead.

Keep an eye on our website as we will be posting our student’s achievements for each month. Here are the statistics from January.
