2nd Class have been learning all about Length and Area in Maths.
We have been looking around our classroom for things that are less than 1 metre, about 1 metre or greater than 1 metre in length. We made some metre strips and then used them to measure. We have been calculating the area of things in the classroom such as our table and maths book. We used cubes for our maths books and we used maths books to calculate the area of our tables. We did lots of estimating before endeavouring to find the actual answer. Some of our estimates were very close to the actual answer.
We checked if our height was less than, about or greater than one metre. We did the same for our arm span. We measured the length and width of the classroom in feet and in metres, as well as in foot strides.
We also became familiar with a square metre and tried to estimate the area of our classroom in square metres which will come in very handy if Mr. Kelly ever wants to change the floor covering in our classroom in the future!! We measured how many copies cover a square metre and how many A4 pages cover a square metre. We really enjoyed learning about length and area.
