Accelerated Reading (AR): Information for Parents

Accelerated Reading (often called AR) is a school-based programme designed to support children in developing strong reading skills, confidence, and a lifelong enjoyment of books. It is used widely in primary and secondary schools and works alongside daily reading and English lessons. See https://www.renaissance.com/products/practice-instruction/accelerated-reader/

What is Accelerated Reading?

Accelerated Reading is a structured approach to reading that helps pupils choose books that are appropriate for their reading level, read regularly, and demonstrate understanding of what they have read. The programme combines independent reading with short online quizzes to check comprehension.

How does it work?

  1. Assessing reading level
Pupils complete a short reading assessment called a STAR Reading Test. This helps identify their current reading ability and provides a recommended book level range.
  2. Choosing a book
Children select books within their recommended range or level (see pictures for examples). These books are challenging enough to support progress, but not so difficult that reading becomes frustrating.
  3. Reading independently
Pupils read their chosen book at school and/or at home. Regular, sustained reading is a key part of the programme.
  4. Taking a quiz
After finishing a book, pupils complete a short online quiz at school. The quiz checks their understanding of the text, not their memory of small details.
  5. Monitoring progress
Teachers use quiz results and reading data to track progress, set goals, and provide support where needed.

Why do we use Accelerated Reading?

Accelerated Reading helps pupils to:

  • Improve reading fluency and comprehension
  • Develop independence and responsibility for their own reading
  • Build confidence by reading books that are well matched to their ability
  • Establish regular reading habits

It also allows teachers to identify pupils who may need additional support or greater challenge.

How can parents support Accelerated Reading at home?

Parents play an important role in helping children succeed with reading. You can support your child by:

  • Encouraging them to read every day, even for short periods
  • Talking about the books they are reading and asking questions about the story
  • Ensuring they bring their reading book to and from school
  • Praising effort and progress, not just quiz scores

Reading together, especially with younger children, can be particularly valuable.

Is AR the only reading your child should do?

No. While Accelerated Reading supports structured progress, we strongly encourage children to read widely and for pleasure. Listening to stories, sharing books as a family, and reading outside the AR scheme all contribute to a strong reading culture.
