The Vikings
We have been learning all about the Vikings, where they came from, when they attacked Ireland and how they became an important part of Irish life. Long ago Viking warriors attacked Ireland for treasures and goods to sell. Over time, the Vikings stayed in Ireland. They built large port towns and set up farms. They shared important customs and language with the Irish people and even started families with them.
The Vikings raided Ireland in longships. Viking longships were long, thin and light to help them move quickly over water. They had large sails to catch the wind. They used oars to row when there was little wind and also used the oars to move their longship onto, or away from, the shore. They carved dragon or snake heads on the front to scare their enemies. Take a look at some of the longships we tried to reconstruct.
